| The cyclocross season
traditionally runs from November to February and was originally developed
in Europe as a means of off-season conditioning for road racers. This form
of racing is not as popular in the U.S. as it is in Europe which some
believe is a factor in the dominance of European MTB riders over U.S.
riders in International MTB races over the last decade.
The USA Cycling rules indicate that the course is
over generally rough terrain of which no more than half is paved. The
length of the course should be at least 1 kilometer (0.62 miles) but no
more than 2 miles. The width of the track should be a minimum of 7 feet
for ease in passing. Natural or artificial barriers are used to force
dismounts but the course must be designed so that 75% of it can be
negotiated on the bicycle. |

The length of the
race is determined by the event organizers according to the number of laps
or a set time. The bicycles that are employed include cyclocross bikes,
mountain bikes (sans bar ends), and "hybrid" bikes. The Chickasaw courses
are 1 - 2 miles in length with mostly artificial barriers (approximately 10)
and a few natural ones thrown in. To date, no two races have been run on the exact same
course.
